How to Tag Blog Content

Think about your file cabinet with all of its tabbed folders to segregate your insurance information from tax files, from medical bills and so on. What happens if you need to find your auto insurance policy quickly? If you’re like me, you could be searching for a while because the insurance file consists of paperwork for auto, home, health and life insurance. Although this might make my insurance broker proud that I’ve covered all of my bases, this intermingled paperwork doesn’t help my attempt to find my auto insurance policy quickly. Filecabinet How to Tag Blog Content

Now think of your blog as a file cabinet, and the different tabbed folders as categories on your blog. Organizing your blog like your file cabinet is great, but you can take it a step further by tagging content. Going back to the insurance file example, think of the file labeled “Insurance” as a Category and within that Category you can tag the words auto, auto policy, vehicle, and any other related words that would help you and your readers more easily find the specific content they’re looking for. Here’s How its Done

It’s fairly simple to tag blog content using a WordPress blog. The process can be broken down into two steps:

1. Choose Your Words Wisely

Choosing the words to tag in a blog post is a lot like choosing the keywords for your website. Focus on the main points covered in your blog article and take into account what people are searching for. Use variations and combinations of those words as your tags.

2. Input the Words into the “Tags” section in WordPress

WordPress even tries to help you choose tags for your post by suggesting words that you used throughout your article. I wouldn’t recommend simply selecting the Apply All button for each post, but you may find some of the suggestions useful. Otherwise, you still have the option of typing in your own tags.

The Benefits of Tagging Content in your Blog

As I mentioned earlier, tagging your blog is a great way to organize your blog topics in a way that makes it easier for readers to find what they’re looking for. Altruism aside, there’s a more selfish reason to tag your blogs, and that reason is Search Engine Optimization. When you tag content in WordPress, WordPress actually creates a separate page for that tag and links to all of your blog articles containing that tag. The additional pages results in your blog being indexed more by search engines, thus helping your blog rise to the top in search engine results.

Of all the ways to help nurture and promote your blog, this is easily the one that requires the least amount of effort on your part. It’s simply a matter of pinpointing your article’s keywords and typing them into the “Tags” field in WordPress. If you do nothing else to help your blog’s chance at survival, tag your content, for your reader’s sake and your own.
